Don wanted to be involved in the boat business, offshore racing, or anything that was different from being a builder in New Jersey. He moved to Bay Harbor, on Miami Beach, and drove back and forth in a new chocolate brown Rolls Royce.
The brand’s savior turned out to be the Italian Marchese, Filippo Theodoli. Filippo had developed an early passion for the sea during his training at the Naval Academy, graduating shortly before the outbreak of World War II.
The original 27’ became the backbone of Magnum Marine in the 60s and early 70s. “It was a very important boat because of its race heritage,” says Lee Wangstad, a marine historian. “It was the hottest thing out there.
The Magnum 53′ was launched in 1977. There was no other boat in the world like her. She was a giant race boat with a deep-V hull and powerful diesel engines. She was the world’s first power yacht and exactly what Filippo had envisioned.
In 1989, Filippo launched what would be the pinnacle of his career: the Magnum 70. Designed also by Pininfarina and laminated in Kevlar, for weight saving and hull strength, the Magnum 70 was the largest and fastest production power yacht of its time.
Magnum 80 became known as Magnum Marine’s Flagship yacht after its debut. The concept of an even larger yacht had been around since a client had asked Filippo to build a Magnum 90 many years before.
After selling Donzi Marine to Teleflex, Inc. in April 1965, Don Aronow started up Magnum Marine next door, in the spring of 1966. The basis of Magnum was to be the 35’ Donzi, designed by Wynne and Walters (mostly Walters) for Donzi.

Bestia was new and successful, but clients wanted a larger Magnum and the 53’, launched nearly twenty years before, looked a bit outdated and needed more space. Katrin thus thought of stretching the 53’ hull to 56’ to provide the additional space that clients wanted both in the interiors and in the engine room, and she called on Paolo Martin for a new deck.
