MIAMI, FL — Saying “this storm doesn’t appear to be going anywhere,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez ordered a mandatory evacuation starting on Thursday for some 146,000 residents who live in beach communities, trailers, and flood-prone areas ahead of the anticipated landfall of Hurricane Irma in Florida this weekend.
During an afternoon briefing, Gimenez said he was holding off on mandatory evacuations because the storm seemed to be moving slower than anticipated.
“After receiving a briefing from our experts and emergency planners, I am issuing a mandatory evacuation order for all mobile homes, all of Zone A and the barrier islands of Zone B,” said Gimenez in announcing the mandatory order Wednesday night.
